Building a Resume in Five Easy Steps

Step One – Name and Contact Information

When starting a resume, it is crucial to include relevant contact information such as your name, phone number, home address and email address, as this will assist the employer in reaching out to you regarding the next steps of employment. Including a professional networking page, portfolio, and/or website can boost your chances of standing out amongst the competition, as companies can gain a clearer understanding of who you are and the skills you possess right off the bat.

Step Two – Professional Summary/Objective

From Microsoft Office to Google Docs, there a plenty of FREE resources on the internet to create a resume template that matches your style. After identifying a template that best represents you to the employer, it’s time to start adding relevant information to get you to the next step of the onboarding process. We recommend using a professional, easy-to-read font such as Times New Roman, as the format of your resume is crucial in creating flow within the resume.

Step Three – Work History (Current or Most Recent Job First).

It is essential to display your professional work history (most recent atop) while detailing accomplishments, awards and responsibilities within each role. This will help the employer further understand you in your current and previous roles to determine whether you will be an ideal company fit. It’s important to also be brief within each job description or you’ll be looking at a two-to-three-page resume. I know you want to showcase any and every ability and past experience the best you can to your potential boss, but a lengthy resume puts you on a fast track to the end of the candidate list.

Step Four – Education, Awards & Accomplishments.

It is necessary to detail past (and current) institutions you have attended while attaching any accomplishments and awards gained along the way. Start by listing institutions you attended from high school to college and on. Awards and accomplishments such as a high GPA or position within a club or organization enhances a resume. This will give the employer great judgment into the type of skill you possess.

Step Five – Relevant Skills.

If you are looking for a career in the restaurant business, past “coding and programming” skills are not relevant in this field and therefore should not be included in this section. Something more along the lines of “leadership” skills or “hospitality” experience contains relevancy to the job description and creates a clear skillset to the hiring team for a restaurant position. The point is, listing relevant key skills that pertain to the role you are actively applying for gives the employer a clear understanding of your skillset that matches the job description.

It’s no secret that hiring professionals today use software and other tools to pick apart resumes and find keywords that suit what the company is looking for in their next hire. Using keywords from the job description like we explained above and incorporating that into your professional summary and other parts of the resume will help you stick out tremendously amongst the pack. If you are able to match the skillset of what the employer is looking for, the more likely your vibrant, detail-oriented resume will take you into the interview stage!
